New Grand Canal bridge
The new bridge is appeared over the Canal Grand, the first built in decades over Venice waterway. The brige is designed by Spanish architect, Santiago Calatrava. Calatrava, who designed the Athens Olympic sports complex and the Palace of the Arts in Valencia, successfully bid to design the bridge in 1999. The two steel buttresses are placed on the canal’s banks yet. The central part of the bridge - 197 feet long and weighing 270 tons - will be put in place during the night of August 11-12.
